Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Progressive muscle relaxation enhances body awareness and lowers stress levels helping you relax and activate the healing response. This technique involves tensing specific muscle groups and then relaxing them to create body awareness. It is termed progressive because it proceeds through all major muscle groups, relaxing and contracting them one at a time leading eventually to total muscle relaxation.
When you are anxious or stressful your body responds with muscle tension. Progressive muscle relaxation relieves tension, reducing cortisol levels. reducing blood pressure and reducing recovery rates from trauma, allowing your body to activate its self-repair mechanisms and restoring well-being.

In Chair Yoga, the mat is replaced by a supportive chair that allows you to stay stabilized. Many people with physical challenges, osteoarthritis, joint pain and mobility issues feel intimidated by traditional mat yoga. Chair Yoga will focus more on how to gently open up your stiff joints, strengthen your muscles, stretch your limbs and improve your posture. Chair Yoga offers a myriad of benefits with increased flexibility, strength, weight loss, and an improved mental state. It’s particularly important for elderly people to enhance their quality of life by implementing practices such as chair yoga into their routines.
13.4 million americans practice yoga or other mind-body exercises such as tai chi. Of these an estimated 1.6 million were 55 and older. Those numbers are expected to rise as senior citizens join health clubs and senior centers that offer yoga.
In Chair Yoga the traditional yoga poses or asanas are adapted for the chair. In my Chair Yoga practice, each persons fitness level and physical challenges are taken into account. Chair Yoga is a gentle way of teaching people to experience yoga as best as they can.
Come on out, wear something comfortable and experience the benefits and quality of life enhancement that these Chair poses will bring to your life.
